Dominoes for Peace- Event to be used as Pilot For Future Police Events in Trench Town

E-mail Print PDF

Kingston, Jamaica: Residents of Trench Town are applauding efforts by the Community Safety and Security arm of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and the Social Development Commission (SDC) following a recently held domino tournament. The activity which was called “Domino for Peace” was held in an area called “Farm” and brought together warring and divided sub-communities and sections in Trench Town. Sections included Fatherless, Federal Crew, Bucka, and Action Pack. The concept of Dominoes for Peace explores the strengthening of community trust and building. While discussing and playing dominoes, residents and police alike have the opportunity to understand how each party thinks, and in that way fosters a better sense of how communication between opposing factions can be enhanced.

Trench Town is known for its association with and production of artist and musicians some of whom are well known internationally like Robert Nestor Marley. In more recent times, the community has been plagued with levels of criminality and conflict but through efforts of local civic organizations including the Trench Town Development Association there has been a change for better. In 2007 for instance the community recorded a total number of fourteen murders but that has now fallen to eight in 2008.Initial findings from a study by the Crime Observatory highlighted that most of the community’s crime problems are on it borders and residents say that this is where the trouble lies. Most of the ongoing conflict is gang related and has brought fear to many residents.

Domino for Peace was held on Friday November 20 and featured eleven teams playing for a top prize. The police also featured a team and they placed third, while the team representing “Action Pack” came second. Rema came first.

Persons who came out to support the activity said that they never thought the day would come when the police would promote an activity like this.

“Mi neva believe mi would live fi (to) si (see) the Police and Rema man dem a play domino together”, a young man expressed.

“Offica unnu ( you all) fi (have to) put it back on again”, another young man said.

Other persons in attendance at Friday’s event included, Superintendent of Police in Kingston West Hugh Bish and Assistant Commissioner of Police at Area 4 Headquarters, Gervers Taylor.
